The chasm of reality between social media and mainstream media – Ministers dropped after online furore

Tamilagam Government

Two Ministers of Tamilagam has been forced to resign from their Ministerial post by Tamilagam government. In case of Ex-Minister Mr. Senthil Balaji, Supreme court sword was hanging above him for the last couple of months. Supreme Court was reluctant to cancel his bail as it granted based on article 21 of our Constitution.

Now by resigning, Ex-Minister Mr. Senthil Balaji has avoided an embarrassing situation to Supreme court. Supreme court had given the option of either bail or ministry. The Ex-Minister had given an affidavit stating that ministership is prerogative of The Chief Minister and Supreme Court cannot dictate him. By placing this argument, the learned advocates conspicuously ignored that though the Honourable Supreme Court had no say in appointment of ministers it is well within their powers and jurisdiction to cancel the bail.

They had gone to the extent of confessing that they had erred in granting the bail. Further they openly expressed he was not given bail on merits but based on Article 21 of our Constitution. It defies logic whether any other person would have got this choice.

In the case of Ex-Minister Ponmudi he was not reprimanded by The Supreme Court. Chief Minister was not legally or constitutionally obliged to drop him. His dastardly and blasphemous remarks against the two primary Hindu sects was as usual downplayed by the mainstream media.

Notwithstanding this, the social media gathered pace. If he was not fit for the party post, he is even more unfit for ministership, was the views agog in social media even to a non-BJP leaner. Even in the case of Ex-Minister Senthil Balaji, the common man frowned on him being anointed as minister. With impending elections next year, perhaps the Tamilagam Cheif Minister did not want to confront the ire of the common man and was forced to act on them.

It is also incomprehensible that major portfolios held by the resigned / dropped ministers have been given as additional charge to existing ministers rather than inducting new ministers.

The power of social media is here to stay. Let us continue relentlessly to voice with our opinions responsibly which are buttressed in the electronic and print media.
