*Killers can’t save lives* – Women safety is paramount!

“Not necessarily a doctor has to save all the time, even a doctor needs to be saved”, is the ending punch line of Sivakarthikeyan-Nelson blockbuster named DOCTOR. Incidentally, a criminal court of Kolkata convicted the prime accused, the online debate has taken a new turn and impending question is, ‘will he get life imprisonment or death penalty?’ Now that there is rage in some portions of the media, the entire debate will turn to electoral politics shortly, no one will be available to stand by safety of such innocent women.

While the entire nation is speaking about saving doctors after the gory incident of 09-Aug-24 at RG Kar Hospital, the concerned doctors are not feeling safe yet. The protesting junior doctors are quoted saying, “We still believe that there are more culprits involved in this case who are roaming around freely” and yes, the doctors are to be saved.

At the larger convenience what is being forgotten, even a doctor becomes a victim of someone’s’ uncontrolled lust. Incidentally the most organized sex workers forum in India is in Sonagachi or Sona Gazi is at walking distance from the site of this horrific sexual assault. This means the aggressor or the group of aggressors were a few hundred metres or few kilometres away from the point of delivery (erstwhile shown as the redlight district of Kolkata – remember the movie named, Mahanadi featuring KamalHassan) , to quench their thirst on lust.

We are not getting into the glaring media reporting, but yes, we are consumers of the best dramatized lustful sexual assaults. As I stayed away from writing on this issues, there were larger than life issues reported live from

 1) Bargur-Krishnagiri in Tamil Nādu (minor assaulted in the name of NCC camp),

 2) ISBT Kashmere Gate to Dehradun (Govt. staff lustfully attacking a minor girl who boarded a bus),

3) Orathanadu-Tanjore in Tamil Nādu (22year woman was allegedly gang-raped by her friend and his accomplices including a minor),

4) Pathanamthitta minor athlete rape (57 of 59 accused held) and

5) the most infamous Anna University incident (TN Legislative Assembly seems to have taken a resolve)

There may be more that we know of but mainstream media would not report and in most cases they are not even reported to the local police(According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report of 2006, about 71% of rape crimes go unreported)

The key here is letting this ‘No Cringe’ generation is know that Lust or indulgence in Sex is indeed a pleasure but it doesnot come by inflicting pain on the opposite person or the opposite sex (on a safer assumption). All it needs greater ethics and understanding, before experiencing these wide range of pleasures. Though most of them boast about the joy, Valluvam clarifies the reality.

Infact, Kamathupal is written in a more conversational tone, with the speaker engaging with others. It is more or less a direct drama created by Valluvam and it focuses on the human experience of sex, exploring themes such as relationships, emotions, and social perceptions. Not just one or two we are talking about 25 chapters, each containing 10 kurals

*மலரினும் மெல்லிது காமம் சிலரதன்

செவ்வி தலைப் படுவார்.

Lust/Sex is indeed more delicate than a flower and only very few can really rejoice in it (only based on their real understanding). In a simple sense, sexual pleasures are not doomed by virtues but it encourages the powerful use of these pleasures in a right or harmless manner. In best hands,a flower is really power. *

In today’s reality, is there a touch of this gentleness in young minds. Not surprisingly most young minds mistake, gentleness of lust and sex to the softporn content available in all forms of mainstream media.Data from Webroot.com, says 35% of all internet downloads are related to pornography. 34% of internet users have experienced unwanted exposure to pornographic content through ads, pop-up ads, misdirected links, or emails. One-third of porn viewers are women.

Regardless of the limelight given to same-sex orientation, it is still true that women end up being in the receiving end in all cases of unreasonable lust.

It may not surprise to recollect the basic form of aggression in our society is sexual aggression an example, the moment you are upset with some on the road, the guaranteed expression is F word. Now this F word directly means to F to F and not the M. i.e., even if the offender is male, the natural expression given in our society is to use that word of sexual aggression towards the female members of the offender’s family. The word b*st*rd is a classic example. If the offender is wrong, then his mother is sexually wrong is standard set across the world.

In a recent mela I visited with my child there were at least half-a-dozen school going boys conversing happily and all their conversations start with ***tha or **tha which directly means an aggressive sexual intercourse. While I can add more, it may not be a pleasant reading. This is a normalized dialect across Tamil Speaking Community (includes the big screen – recently Kamalahasan in his Indian 2 promotion had a sharp lecture about the usage of foul words in films with his piece of advice to the censor board).

Boys trained in this thought process are no different from those brutal killers, except for the fact they have not fallen to rage yet.The irony all of us have these instinct inside. You might have been familiar with these range of words in your own language and dialects, but what makes it disgustingly interesting is all rage words will have direct impact to sexually inflicting pain to a woman and only to a woman. Hence being killers, we still talk about saving these victims.

Remember valluvar’s heroine expresses her feigned anger when the hero is understood have beyond home for his lust,

*பெண்ணியலார் எல்லாரும் கண்ணின் பொதுஉண்பர்

நண்ணேன் பரத்தநின் மார்பு(Kural 1311)

Oh man, you are given to prostitution; all those who are born as womankind enjoy you with their eyes in an ordinary way. I will not embrace you anymore. *

So, in valluvar’s lens the boys are not bad, but if they are not told what is bad, they shall remain bad (inflicting pain even in a verbal cuss). However, what we may be missing is being attached to virtues does not stop you from experiencing the worldly pleasures. Pleasure without pain and he beautifully narrates that pleasure, guiding one to rejoice that embrace of your partner

*கண்டுகேட்டு உண்டுயிர்த்து உற்றறியும் ஐம்புலனும்

ஒண்தொடி கண்ணே உள(Kural 1101)

All joys that senses five- sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch- can give,

In this resplendent armlets-bearing damsel! *

Hence if you are that one to save that doctor, remember *you can’t save lives being a killer*.

  1. Excellent article. You have nicely connected the reality with Thirukkural. Enjoyed reading.

  2. Excellent write up. Thirukural examples are so fitting and gives a breaking thought to the reader. Thanks

  3. Our boys & men should become refined. But the thought itself gives me exhaustion. It should begin from homes. This dream of having well behaved men & boys in our society should become true one day. Let us wait… maybe for centuries.

  4. What a matured point of view ? Amazing and wonderful to read the article, with anecdotes from Our renowned scholar Thiruvalluvar adds justification and decorates your article with a native flavour of righteousness and values of yesteryears. The change in society starts from home, as a psychologist I feel that the demon who spoiled and other such rouges out there need slap and had been groomed and tamed like the animals in zoo, by their parents. I hardly ponder if these dutchadhargal had a better family background, if at all they are urged to commit such sinful acts why not they go to sonagachi or alike places. Again compulsory education and moral values has to start from childhood, god fearing and personal ethics plays a major role in one’s personality . May articles like such as yours reach the rogues and scoundrels , self guilt is the lifelong punishment till their death. Well done and kudos to your writing Arvind ji

  5. Your writing is so beautiful because you always know the right word for the right moment.
